Name

It is often said that the city's name comes from the Quechua phrase "Ari, quepay" which means "Yes, stay". Nowadays one assumes that the name is from Aymara "ari" (peak) + "kipa" (locative) and means something like "near the mountain".

History of Arequipa

Archaeological findings indicate the fertile valley in which Arequipa is situated has been occupied back to 5000 - 6000 BCE. In the 15th century, the region, then occupied by Aymara Indians, was conquered by the Inca and served as an important supplier of agrarian products to the Inca Empire. The modern city of Arequipa was founded on 15 August 1540, by Garci Manuel de Carbajal, an emissary of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. more...

Geography of Arequipa

Arequipa's terrain is rough and characterized by heavy layers of volcanic lava. Volcanic cones can be seen emerging above the plateaus and forming mountains like the Misti, Chachani, Ampato, Mismi, Solimana and Coropuna. There are deep and impressive canyons like the Majes, Colca, Sihuas and Ocona where important aspects of the ecological evolution of this territory can be clearly observed. On the coast, the desert dunes like the ones located in the Majes, Sihuas and La Joya are particularly beautiful. The main rivers in this department are the Ocona, Yauca, Camana and Quilca.

Shopping in Arequipa

Arequipa is an excellent place to buy alpaca clothing. Good quality items are available cheaper than in Cusco or Lima, as most of the firms are based in Arequipa. Bear in mind that even for the best items, the quality is not usually up to the standards of clothing in the west (Alpaca 111 is an exception), and all alpaca items must be hand washed and carefully cared for. Cheaper items are much the same as elsewhere in Peru, and are not usually 100% alpaca. more...

South America is seen by film distributors as part of the American market, so new films from the US arrive quickly in Lima, where they’re shown cheaply and in the original language (usually but not necessarily English) with Spanish subtitles. European movies are also regularly screened, especially in Lima (again in the original language), but [...]
Peru’s economy in recent years has been shaky at best. Peru has had to deal with challenges such as hyperinflation and unreported revenue from illegal industries. Peru’s principal natural [...]
Peru encompasses a past of over 10,000 years of the most harsh and inhospitable, if spectacular, environments in the world - the high Andes of South America. Civilization in the Andes has long been equated with the Incas. The architectural achievements of the Incas are inevitably compared to the feats of the Romans. In contrast, the [...]

Most Peruvians get around the country by bus, as these go just about everywhere and are extremely good value. However, wherever possible, visitors tend to use one of the country’s trains - an experience in itself - despite being considerably slower than the equivalent bus journey. With the distances in Peru being so vast, many [...]
